30 September 2026 · Product Launch
At DevDay 2026, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman introduced Dots, described as “remarkably capable, always-on” agents that can keep working across projects in ChatGPT, Slack, and Teams. The launch comes weeks after Meta released its Muse shopping agent and as OpenAI faces scrutiny over agent incidents.
The company also released GPT-6.1 Sol, positioned as near-Astra intelligence for coding, computer use, and professional work at roughly one-fifth of Astra’s standard API token prices. ChatGPT is now used weekly by about 1.2 billion people, according to company figures cited in coverage, and OpenAI is inviting partners such as Adobe to offer software inside ChatGPT—an “app store for AI” pitch.
Additional DevDay items included reusable cloud environments for Codex, in-chat app experiences for developers, and a higher $500 Pro tier in some reports alongside changes to the existing $200 plan. European Pro availability for some agent features was reported as limited at launch.
The product push is a pivot after the Astra cancellation: ship cheaper, more controllable systems and persistent agents rather than the withheld flagship.
Key takeaway. OpenAI is competing on agents and price—Dots plus a lower-cost Sol model—while treating ChatGPT as a distribution platform for third-party software.
