Alphabet’s Google opened preorders for Googlebook, a new premium laptop category starting at $899. The machines are built around Gemini and run a blended environment that mixes Android with desktop elements derived from ChromeOS, with partner hardware in the first wave.
The pitch is continuity: phones, apps, and notebook workflows tied together by the same assistant rather than a bolted-on chatbot window. That is Google’s answer to a market where Microsoft has spent years wrapping Copilot around Windows and Office.
Hardware is the distribution channel for models that otherwise live behind an API. If Gemini is going to be the default interface for search, docs, and device control, it needs a keyboard and a battery, not only a browser tab.
Buyers should watch software maturity as closely as specs. A new OS blend can mean missing enterprise management features on day one. The $899 floor suggests Google wants volume in the AI-PC wave, not only a halo device.
Key takeaway Googlebook is Gemini as a product surface: an $899 laptop is how you put a model in someone’s bag instead of only in the cloud.
