OpenAI announced new ChatGPT ad experiences on September 16. “Sponsored Agents” let selected U.S. advertisers start a clearly labeled conversation after an ad click. That chat is kept separate from ChatGPT’s independent answers and from the user’s original thread, then can send the person to the advertiser’s site.
The company also added natural-language tools for creating, updating, and analyzing campaigns in Ads Manager, optional AI-written headline variants, and a HubSpot CRM integration. A ChatGPT Ads Shopify app lets U.S. merchants sync catalogs, use Shopify conversion events, and manage performance from Admin. Additional markets were slated to open from September 23. Shopify CEO Harley Finkelstein called Shopify OpenAI’s first commerce partner.
Wayfair and Angi were named among launch advertisers in follow-on coverage. The design tries to solve the trust problem that killed earlier “answer ads”: the sponsored agent is boxed off so the unpaid model does not quietly become a salesperson.
If the test holds, ChatGPT becomes a storefront with an agent closer, not only a search box with banners. That is a different business model from API tokens — and a new surface for disclosure rules.
Key takeaway OpenAI is productizing ads as separate, labeled agents — with Shopify and HubSpot wired in from day one.
