Google DeepMind has released Gemini 3.8 Flash and Gemini 3.8 Flash Cyber, the third Flash iteration in six weeks. The standard Flash model continues Google’s push for fast, cheap general inference. Flash Cyber is a security-oriented variant aimed at autonomous vulnerability discovery.
Flash Cyber scored 86.2% on the CyberGym benchmark while remaining at Flash-level speed and price, according to launch coverage. Access is limited to vetted defenders through Google’s new Fairwind Program, mirroring OpenAI’s Daybreak pattern of putting offensive cyber skill behind an application wall.
The cadence is strategic. New DeepMind chief Koray Kavukcuoglu has said frontier AI leadership is ‘the only thing that matters’ and has pushed faster execution as Gemini 3.5 Pro remains delayed and Gemini 4 is described as DeepMind’s most ambitious training run yet.
For security teams, a low-latency model that can hunt bugs at Flash economics changes the cost curve of automated defense — and of automated offense if access controls fail. The Fairwind gate is the product as much as the weights.
Key takeaway — Google is competing on both cheap speed (3.8 Flash) and gated cyber capability (Flash Cyber at 86.2% CyberGym), shipping on a six-week cadence rather than waiting for a delayed Pro model.
