Anthropic has signed a $35 billion cloud-computing agreement with Lambda, the Nvidia-backed neocloud, for capacity at a Texas campus being built by Hut 8 in Nueces County. Sources told Reuters the slice of the project tied to the deal is about 350 megawatts.
The Wall Street Journal reported that Nvidia will hold the lease on the data center, another case of the chipmaker using its balance sheet to lock in demand for its GPUs. Hut 8’s Beacon Point campus near Corpus Christi is planned at up to 1 gigawatt, with initial energization targeted for early 2027.
The Lambda contract lands on top of an already aggressive capacity spree. Recent reports have linked Anthropic to a $45 billion Nscale deal in West Virginia, plus large arrangements with Fluidstack and other providers as Claude demand outruns available training and inference power.
None of the companies issued a detailed public statement on the Lambda terms. The structure — Nvidia as leaseholder, a former crypto miner as developer, a neocloud as intermediary, and a frontier lab as offtaker — is becoming the template for how AI compute is financed when traditional hyperscalers cannot move fast enough.
Key takeaway. Compute, not model architecture, is the binding constraint. Multi-tens-of-billions cloud offtake deals are now the main way frontier labs secure the next training cycle.
