OpenAI notified SpaceX that it will wind down the contract that supplies OpenAI models to Cursor, with a proposed shutoff date of 12 November 2026 — the maximum notice in the agreement after a change of control. SpaceX completed an all-stock purchase of Anysphere, Cursor’s parent, earlier in August in a deal valued at $60 billion.
In a 28 August company post, OpenAI said it “cannot be confident that SpaceX will use our technology within our terms of service, based on our experience with Elon Musk’s companies violating contracts.” It said future models, including a system referred to as Astra, will not be provided to Cursor. Musk replied on X that he “couldn’t care less.”
Cursor CEO Michael Truell said OpenAI models account for about 5 percent of Cursor user traffic and that the company was speaking with OpenAI. Anthropic separately said it would increase compute support for Claude inside Cursor.
The episode is less about one IDE than about how model labs treat a customer that becomes a competitor. Once SpaceX folded Cursor into a SpaceXAI unit sitting next to xAI and Grok, OpenAI treated the integration as a terms-of-service problem and used a change-of-control clause rather than a technical dispute.
Key takeaway The most widely used AI coding app loses direct GPT access on 12 November because its new owner is Elon Musk’s SpaceX — a contract fight, not a model-quality fight.
