Global Policy in the Age of the AI Arms Race
As AI capabilities skyrocket, international cooperation and cautious legislation take center stage.
The rapid advancement of AI has policymakers scrambling to catch up. Across the globe, what experts are referring to as an “AI arms race” has prompted a wave of international collaboration and legislative action.
Recently, the US and Japan announced a sweeping tech collaboration specifically targeting AI development and safety. Similarly, the UK and Canada have signed a landmark AI compute agreement, pooling resources to stay competitive while establishing mutual ethical standards.
However, many leaders remain wary of the rapid pace of development. Prominent politicians like Bernie Sanders have advocated for a temporary pause in AI development to assess the societal and employment impacts. Open-source initiatives led by companies like Red Hat and IBM are even attempting to translate these complex AI policy requirements directly into code to ensure compliance at the developer level.
